What do I do if I've painted a wall with Kilz and it won't adhere?

I have a dark cranberry accent wall and purchased a latex Kilz paint to cover the wall before I change the color to a neautral tan. I am having problems getting the Kilz to adhere to the wall and am thinking that the previous cranberry color may have had some gloss to it and seems to be causing problems with the Kilz sticking to the paint. There is some bubbling in the paint as well. How do I ';clean up'; this Kilz paint that won't stick to the wall and correct the problem as soon as possible, without a huge mess and without damaging my wall? Help, this is horrible!!!What do I do if I've painted a wall with Kilz and it won't adhere?
If the previous coat had some gloss, that may well be the problem. Kilz latex is not a good choice for that application.

Did you clean? Over a period of time, oils and dust can accumulate on walls causing similar problems. It doesn't have to look dirty to be too dirty to paint.

Removing the Kilz will depend upon how long it has been there. If you put it on in the last 48 hours or so, a strong TSP (Tri-Sodium Phosphate) solution will probably take it off, but it will not be easy. You can get TSP at any store that has a decent paint department -- WalMart has it if you have a 24 hour one and want to start now.

Mix the TSP to the strongest solution listed on the box. Scrub with a brush to break into the surface, then finish with a sponge. I would get a couple of different brushes to try -- you will want the softest one that will do the job to minimize damage to the layer unerneath (maybe). My first try would be a short, natural bristle brush. The sooner you start on this the better your chances will be.

After the TSP, rinse well and let it dry for a day or two before you try again.

Now for the next problem. You say the paint is bubbling. You mean the original paint? This must be addressed as well. There is some problem underneath what you are doing, and it will have to come off. Break one of the bubbles and pull off all of the paint that you can.

Does the bubble go all the way to the bare wall? If so, the original paint was probably applied without a proper primer. In this case, the paint on the joints (assuming drywall) will probably come off easily, the rest will not. I would remove any obviously loose spots and use drywall joint compound to fill in the voids left by the removed paint.

If the bubble goes to another layer of paint, there was probably a problem similar to yours -- too much gloss to paint over, or the surface was not cleaned well. In this case it is hard to say where it will peel and where it will stick. Again, remove any obvious trouble spots. This time you will need to clean the voids well (TSP again) and fill the void with joint compound. The cleaning is not needed if you get to bare wall.

In either case, you may find that all of the paint wants to come off. I have seen this a few times, and it is really the best case because it lets you correct all the problems. If it wants to come off, it should.

Now back to painting. Prime any bare wall or new joint compund with a good drywall primer. Let that dry well. If you still have some paint left on the wall, it should be cleaned well by now and you may have eliminated any gloss -- TSP helps with the gloss as well.

Since you have had a problem, I would not take chances with this. Get a shellac based primer sealer (BIN is one example, there are others) and seal the entire surface -- including any areas you primed with the drywall primer. Wait a couple of days before you do this to make sure any drywall primer is wll cured as the shellac based sealer will slow the curing process considerably.

Shellac based is important here because it sticks to almost anything. The cleaning is still important, but gloss is less of an issue.

Most of the shellac sealers are transluscent, so you will be able to see the underlying color through it. This is not a problem. A good paint will still cover your cranberry in one or two coats. The trick is to allow a bit more curing time between coats. Wait a couple of days between coats instead of the few hours most paint cans indicate for a recoat and you will get much better coverage.

Good luck. What do I do if I've painted a wall with Kilz and it won't adhere?
My guess is the wall color was an oil base paint and the Kilz you are using is a water base. I would wipe off the Kilz the best you can, let the wall dry for a day, then get yourself a good primer from the hardware store before you go to your new color.....or trade in the Killz you have for can of oil base. Killz does make an oil base paint.

KilZ 2 Question on ceiling painting.?

I have a ceiling that needed a bit of repair due to water damage. I have repaired, and applied Kilz2 for two coats. It looks good. Do I need to put another coat of paint, or is just the Kilz enough?KilZ 2 Question on ceiling painting.?
Primer left on its own will have a tendency to discolor. Paint the ceiling with finish paint. You are best off paint the entire ceiling to avoid having the repair ';flash';. You can get Ceiling White paint at most paint stores, and it's generally several dollars/gallon cheaper than standard wall paint. Hope this helps.KilZ 2 Question on ceiling painting.?
Keep in mind that Kilz is just a primer, not a paint. That means that there's glue in the primer so dust, cobwebs, etc. will stick nicely to it. It's always best to put at least one coat of paint on top of a primed ceiling.

That being said, if it looks good, you're in a rented place and you won't be there long, then by all means, leave the primer alone. If however, you're in your own home, do take the time to apply at least one coat of ceiling paint.
cecilia,

If it looks good leave it alone. If the paint matches the rest of the ceiling, it's fine.

good luck

  • Will Kilz paint remove the pine smell from my wood shelf?

I bought some brand new pine wood the other day, but would like to get rid of that pine smell, as it is getting into my cloth collectibles. I tried a krylon sealer, made it worse... tried painting them, didnt take the smell away. I tried that on the extras... I would like to do it right on the actual shelves. Will Kilz remove the pine smell? Will Kilz paint remove the pine smell from my wood shelf?
Every surface would have to be covered in order to seal out the smell of pine. The products that you have mentioned should have done the trick. Give it some more time. Will Kilz paint remove the pine smell from my wood shelf?
remove? prolly not- but it will cover it up and make it less noticeable.... I'm not sure what would REMOVE it... in time it will be less noticeable though!

** I thought about this question last night- I was watching a commercial for arm and hammer paint. It actually covers up and hides the smell of wood and other stinches....... try it!! I hope it works.

Painting experts.....Kilz II water based sealant OR Primer to cover work done on painted walls b4 repainting?

HELP, I hate getting conflicting statements from professionals. 1 year ago I had my entire house professionally painted. Last wk Contractors came in %26amp; corrected all of my nail pops %26amp; imperfections. The ones that did the sanding %26amp; spackling stated to apply the Kilz II over the white spots b4 touching up the paint. The painters stated to simply cover the white spots with a Primer b4 painting. Which do u recommend? Thanks soooooooo much in advance!!Painting experts.....Kilz II water based sealant OR Primer to cover work done on painted walls b4 repainting?
Kilz II is the best primer you will find.It is available in quarts and larger containers. Just get as much as you need. It's not too expensive. You can even get it in a spray can.

I have water stains on my ceiling kilz just bleeds through what can i use to cover stains before painting?

There's another brand I like better than Kilz.

It's BIN 1.2.3. Try it, but yes if the area is still wet you'll need to stop what's above it that wet it.

I have water stains on my ceiling kilz just bleeds through what can i use to cover stains before painting?
There is a possibility that the sheetrock in that area is permanently damaged. You may want to cut the area out (go at least 3 inches past the area in all directions so you have good sheetrock to work with). Cut the area out in a square. Cut a fresh piece of sheetrock (same thickness) the same size of what you cut out of the ceiling. After you have cut the fresh sheetrock, cut an additional 1/4'; from all 4 sides of the fresh sheetrock and rip the 1/4'; piece of sheetrock from the paper backing MAKING SURE NOT TO CUT-OFF THE PAPER BACKING. Put spackle on all 4 edges of the fresh cut sheetrock and around the paper-exposed area of the fresh sheetrock. Place into square cut out in ceiling. You can secure it into place by using a piece of 1 X 2 wood and using small nails to nail the wood to the ceiling until it drys in place. The paper from the fresh sheetrock (where you removed the 1/4'; pieces)should over-lap onto the ceiling. After it drys, you can sand it with light sandpaper and paint. Good luck!!I have water stains on my ceiling kilz just bleeds through what can i use to cover stains before painting?
Use the kilz that is oils base and make sure it is dry all the though to the back. I have seen even with the best of water stain blocker it still didn't work so what we use or do is to remove the paper on the front of the drywall and drywall mud over the spot. Use base kilz and paint. Works every time. I am a building contractor for over 30 years. Shellac is what we use to use but can leave a shining spot which we call flashing
first you need to spackle it before you paint it. When you do spackle it make sure it is fully dried before painting. You can get spackle at any hardware store.
let the kilz dry overnight then reapply another coat
Sounds like the area is still moist. I have used shellac over leak spots before with good results.
KILZ, any hardware store has it, spray or paint on.

Clear silicone 100% waterproof caulk used to fill nail holes. Does this require Kilz b4 painting w/flat?

Feels oily to touch upon application. Am repainting interior flat paint, same color. Is the caulk I used going to bleed oil thru the flat paint?Clear silicone 100% waterproof caulk used to fill nail holes. Does this require Kilz b4 painting w/flat?
You will have a tough time getting any paint to adhere to the silicone caulk, however, a dab of an oil base primer will be your best bet. Then topcoat with your paint. Better yet, if the caulk shrunk into the nail holes or if you underfilled the nail holes then just hit them again with a spackle then topcoat with whatever type of paint you like. The good news is that they are only nail holes (hopefully small ones) so even if the paint does not adhere well, hopefully it won't be that noticeable. Good luck, and don't listen to the other suggestion about sanding sealer, that is not a proper or good use for sanding sealer.Clear silicone 100% waterproof caulk used to fill nail holes. Does this require Kilz b4 painting w/flat?
yes it will keep bleeding through until you prime with an oil based product that is suitable for flat latex. kilz is really toxic and smell really bad especially the oil based. get you a quart of sanding sealer in a satin and use that instead. you can use a water bourne product to keep the fumes down to a minamum. this product dries fast and is re-sealable in around 20 minutes. apply another coat and then paint with your flat. should be OK then.
silicone is not paintable...the paint will ';bead'; up.
Why are you filling holes with silicone? Use Spackle! Scilicone will not take paint!
I don't think you'll get any paint to stick to silicone.

Cut it out and use spackle.

Need help with painting my home ( using kilz)?

i am painting my living room....the color now is a dark burgandy and i am repainting it a kakhi color. i am using kilz. does the kilz need to be thick or just a light coat. and should you still be able to see some of the burgandy through it?Need help with painting my home ( using kilz)?
If you are only using the Kilz to hide the red than you should not waste your time or money with the application of any prime .kakhi covers great and 2 coats are probably all you will need. And never apply paint to thick(cracking can occur) and never to thin(it will not provide the servicablity the manufactuer intended).Need help with painting my home ( using kilz)?
It will be a thin coat. Make sure you let it dry 24 hours b-4 painting over it!
Use a light coat. Thick coats of paint can result in cracking of the paint film and sometimes lack of adhesion.

Kilz is a stain blocker, and I assume you are using it because red colors can sometimes *bleed* through, as opposed to just showing through. Even though you'll still see some burgundy through the coat of Kilz, it'll stop the bleed. Khaki will have raw umber in it, and should give you pretty good coverage over the Kilz.

BTW, when you're *not* going over something that might bleed, if you're changing colors drastically, a medium gray primer is actually your best bed. Gray covers very well, and most colors go over it without much show through.

Can you use Kilz to prime a concrete porch before painting?

They make primers specifically for masonry. Check a good paint store for help selecting the correct primer for the job. Hope this helps. Can you use Kilz to prime a concrete porch before painting?
KILLZ is a primer, but there are special concrete paints which are formulated to bond with the cement; KILLZ isn't one of them. If you place KILLZ out for a primer, it will set and you will be able to coat it with your regular paint, but it will begin to chip in a few years and become almost unsightly in about 5 depending on the wear and traffic over the painted surface. Can you use Kilz to prime a concrete porch before painting?
Yes you can but should you? No cement paint adheres best to bare cement or other cement paint. It is formulated not to require a primer. You should be able to coat the porch with one coat. Make sure the porch is clean and dry before you start to paint. If you have a pressure washer I would use it first. Don't forget to make sure you are aware of the drying time. Temperature and humidity have an effect on the drying time.

  • Paint bubbling when I primer (Kilz) in the corner of the room.?

    Location: NJ

Weather: COLD 32' Snowed 3 days ago (2inches)

Walls: original plaster walls in a 50yr old house

The walls have a few (3?) coats of old paint on them. I was primer the walls with Kilz when one corner of the room the paint started to create large bubbles (hand sized). The bubbles go up to about hip level.

The old paint was old, but not discolored. I didnt notice any bubbling. The bubbles appeared just as I applied the kilz using a roller... like magic! The walls were dry when I applied it. And there was no prexisting discoloration on the walls.

This is the corner of the house, second floor. It is under a window, but does go around the corner. The roof overhangs above the window, outside is original alum siding.

Is this a chemical reaction? How can i fix it? I will cut out the bubble once it dries.

i've seen this and it can be a nightmare from the lower regions.

you need to scrape and sand as much as possible all the old paint off the wall and prime with an oil primer (not especially kilz, though it is a good product, i don't recommend it for under enamel paints). then make smooth with drywall compound and sand that smooth and prime with pva drywall primer and paint. should solve the problem

also don't try this in a single day...give it a day between coats for the moisture to leave the surface.Paint bubbling when I primer (Kilz) in the corner of the room.?
It is most likely that the paint on the wall was already loose and when you put on the kilz it bubbled. When it dries it will probably lay back down. But you need to cut out than put some compound over sand than repaint.

Which is the better primer for painting over paneling, Kilz or Zinsser?

Kilnz is - the oil base kind. Use caulking after sanding on the cracks, wipe with wet rag - after sanding and after caulking. Let dry for 24 hours, mask well, and be sure to wear a respirator because it will (kilnz) get you terribly high, then a horrible headache afterwards, Then open the doors and windows to let dry out good.....It is just a better product than Zinsser and Kilnz is easier to clean up through an airless paint sprayer or get a 3/4 inch roller(a good one), since you are going through all the expense anyway and just throw away after use.. do not take the cost and time to clean a roller. Hope this helps.....Which is the better primer for painting over paneling, Kilz or Zinsser?

    kils is good
I have used both. It has been my experience that KILZ covers and seals far better than any other product for residentsial and commercial painting. I have not used it in industrial applications. Kilz dries fairly quickly with some moving air and ventilation. The oil based is the best but the water based works OK. Zinseer is too thin, does not cover well, and I have had to apply as many as 3 coats to get it to work. I have never had a problem using KILZ. Except the smell.

Can I paint over an eggshell finish, or do I need to use Kilz first?

I've painted over the eggshell finish without using Kilz and it was fine. You definitely would need to use Kilz if you are going from spongepaint to a solid color, otherwise the texture will show. Can I paint over an eggshell finish, or do I need to use Kilz first?
yes, you can paint over an eggshell finish. I personally prefer to sand rather than apply primer, assuming that I'm sure that the last couple of coats of paint are not lead based. It's quicker, faster, and cheaper. All you need to do when you sand over a glossy finish is basically wipe over the finish enough to reduce the gloss which improves the bond. usually simply wiping over the surface as if wiping dust off is enough. Can I paint over an eggshell finish, or do I need to use Kilz first?
eggshell is pretty much the color of primer. If the eggshell is a gloss or a semi gloss I would suggest you use a product called Liquid Sandpaper. It a little smelly but whatt it does is take off the glossyness

of the finish so the next paint can really hold on.

You just put it on a rag and wipe the paint down. Quick and fast.
Before you sand the surface, it is a good idea to wipe the surfac down with a mild solution of TSP (you can get that at a paint store) or liquid sandpaper. Their of these will remove any oil or wax that might be on the surface.

Painted the ceiling with Kilz primer & now it's bubbling just in 1 spot-why? How should I deal with this?

The paint we are covering is latex and the paint we are using is also latex so that shouldn't be the problem.. My plan of attack at this point is to let the area dry, then sand it and repaint it with the Kilz primer before I cover the entire ceiling with the ceiling paint.Painted the ceiling with Kilz primer %26amp; now it's bubbling just in 1 spot-why? How should I deal with this?
    I agree with your plan.

But if it doesn't work you may have to smear a very thin coat of drywall compound over the area. Let it dry over-night, sand and then primer and paint for a guaranteed finish.Painted the ceiling with Kilz primer %26amp; now it's bubbling just in 1 spot-why? How should I deal with this?
Wipe the bubbled paint off. Let the rest of the paint dry. Clean the spot with TSP or a cleaner that cleans oil residue. Then make sure everything is dry, you might want to slightly sand abit cause we don't know wants on there to begin with. Then use to same primer. Kilz is a pretty good primer. However if its a watery bubble you got yourself of leak and that would be a total bummer.
I'm gonna guess and say it's a kitchen ceiling that's ';bubbling'; if so this is caused by an oil splatter or food. The oil and water based Kilz won't mix. Water based primers like Kilz do not work well on stains so if it was a stain to begin with it will take 2 to 3 coats of the water based to finally seal it for you this is why the oil primer/sealers work better. If it's not a kitchen ceiling I'll still bet there is some kind of an oil repelling your Kilz, get a spray can of the oil based kilz and just spray that area, good luck Les the painter
If it's bubbling only in one spot, there's a good chance that it's getting wet from above.

Can i use the primer/sealer Kilz on my ceiling without painting over it?

I have to paint Kilz over my walls and ceiling in a home I am remodeling, and since the ceilings are going to be white anyways....I figured I would just save some money on paint and not paint over the Kilz. Can i use the primer/sealer Kilz on my ceiling without painting over it?
Beware of the Kilz2 that is water based..it is useless for covering stains..it is good for priming over hard colors or new drywall to seal it..but if the problems on your walls and ceilings are from stains, yellowing of the walls due to smoking, crayons and ink marks it will not seal it and it will ';burn'; right thru it showing through your finish paint(the marks/stains)..You must use the original kilz that is a solvent base to kill the stains out if this is tthe issue..I am a 37 year experienced painter and when latex kilz came out I tried it a couple of times..and as I say..it is useless for heavy stains and water marks...You cannot use either as a finish paint for where you cut in around the edge of the ceilings with it( latex or solvent based kilz) it will ';picture frame'; on you showing all around where you cut in.. If it is being sprayed..You can get buy with it but not recommended...but you must be a VERY EXPERIENCED spray person for it not to show from the over lapping of your fan on the sprayer..Can i use the primer/sealer Kilz on my ceiling without painting over it?
The purposes of a primer are to cover over and hide what's there AND to make the surface accept a new finish coat more easily and uniformly.

Kilz (or any other primer) is not meant to be a finish-quality product. The Kilz will help to cover up imperfections, stains, etc., on the ceiling and will prepare the ceiling to be painted, but it is not, in and of itself, a paint.

It's smart to use a good primer before you repaint a ceiling. And a gallon of decent white paint for the ceiling won't set you back much, and it won't take much time. Simply using the primer to start with will (in the long run) save you both time and money, and give you a better finished surface.
It'll still take a few coats to make that stuff look like actual paint, so I'd just paint it. Besides, primer (especially Kilz) has no scrubability. Granted it's on a ceiling, but if there's any dust flying around or if there's any smoke in the room it's going to be yellow in no time.
No, I don't think you'd like the way it looks; it's rather thick and chalky looking when it dries. You need to paint over it. BTW, there's absolutely no rule that says ceilings have to be white; in fact, it makes rooms more interesting if the ceiling is a color!
no, it's called a primer for a reason. it's not designed as paint but as an undercoat for paint,if your going to do a thing do it right. that way you do not come back and do it again later
There are some primers that can be left as a finish coat. [on a ceiling] Dunn Edwards 'Prep-Seal' can be tinted to Swiss coffee and left alone. I've done that a couple of times with no complaints. It's cheap.
no you have to apply a 2 coats of a finish paint,,,kilz will turn yellow in bout 2 or 3 months,, no matter if some one smokes in the house or not

  • Should i put kilz on a cast iron bathtub before I paint it?

Yes, but don't use the paint on kind use the spray paint kind. The kilz that paints on by brush does not give you a smooth finish to work with and you will see every brush stroke, sand until your fingers don't work and find yourself frustrated. You can also use a metal primer by Rustoleum if rust is an issue.

If you do not prime it, you will be unhappy with the results particularly because you are painting metal that is going to be in high humidity and in a water application. Also, be certain to use a paint that is rated for metal.Should i put kilz on a cast iron bathtub before I paint it?

If it is simply the stain, clean it well, prime, and paint at least two coats.

    Paint smell (Kilz) HELP!?

Bought a house that had chain smokers in it. So I painted the entire house with Kilzs paint as a primer, then painted it with regular paint. After 2 months it still smells! Really bad it's like a slight smoke smell with paint (heavy paint smell). I have par-ky flooring throughout and I wonder if the smoke has got into the wood.Paint smell (Kilz) HELP!?
Until you can get your vents cleaned try small bowls of white vinegar in each room, they will help with the smokey/paint smell. You can also try baking soda sprinkled on carpets let it set 30 mins. and vaccum your carpets, and small bowls of baking soda in each room. After cleaning you hardwood floors rinse in WEAK vinegar solution 1/4 c. vinegar to gallon of water dry quickly with old towels.Paint smell (Kilz) HELP!?
Well, hopefully you learned not to buy houses like that.

Febreeze has fabric freshener and air freshener. Also, I think the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser also has a febreeze scented kind so you could clean surfaces with that. Vacume frequently, even floors. Have any rugs steamed, too If you can afford it and you really think the smoke has seaped into the flooring you can get new flooring or cover the floors with rug squares which are cheaper than buying new floors or wall to wall carpet. Hope you get rid of that smell, good luck!
You might consider getting an electronic air purifier for the rooms that have the odors. You can buy these in Walmart or any dept. store. That should do it. You can also keep all of the windows open with fans directing the air outside. (this may take a few weeks and I highly suggest this for paint odors) Sherwin Williams makes low VOC paints that have no odor and are safe for the environment.

If the smell is coming from the floor, use a damp sponge mop with a pine based cleaner. Then immediately wipe the floor with a dry towel so that the water doesn't seep into the parquet.
I bet the smoke smell is in your air conditioning and venting. Replace the filters, and see if you can call someone to clean out your vents.

Put your nose to the floors and see if the smell is coming from those too, but I bet it's your ventilation.

Having solved paint problems over the years, I would have to say that the wall wasn't completely dry when you primed %26amp; painted.

You may have a moisture problem with the wall.

Is it an inside wall? Outside wall?

What is on the others side of the wall, or above that area?

Are there water pipes or drain pipes in the wall?

There are times when cold water pipes sweat (Like when a toilet runs all the time. It can be so slow that you don't notice it.)

If you can't figure out by just checking the things I mentioned you could make a hole in the wall %26amp; check it out.I have a wall that had mold on it. I treated the mold, dried the wall out and primed it with Kilz. I painted?
The stuff you treated the mold with is causing the bubbling. Sand wall, reprime, repaint.
Did you do this all at once, because the Kilz and the mold killer could have a cemical reaction. Other then that it is posessed and you need to knock the wall down and rebuild. LOL
Sounds like you have a moisture problem on the back side of the drywall . what is on the other side of the wall? If you make a small opining you should be able to detect moisture (wet insulation, mold inside wall cavity) If its a bath or a kitchen it could be poor ventilation. also if its a bath or kitchen a flat paint is more prone to mold. I still lean toward moisture behind the wall.

If you find a moisture problem then you need to fix the source of the problem. leaking pipe, poor drainage from the outside of house, leaking basement, roof leak, many others. then strip all the old drywall or plaster. and remove all the moldy areas, replace the old damp insulation, new drywall, primer and paint. just because you cant see the mold its still there. THIS IS A HEALTH RISK FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. DON'T JUST COVER IT UP. IT MAY BE TIME TO CONTACT A CONTRACTOR. sorry for the bad news, I hope you problem is not this bad.

Where can I find the interior paint color ';barely mocha'; by kilz? ?

We painted our walls with that color and now I can't find any trace of it anywhere. Kilz doesn't even mention it on their website anymore. I need some more to do some touch up.Where can I find the interior paint color ';barely mocha'; by kilz? ?
Walmart, I am quite certain. If all else fails, get a chip from the wall, and Walmart will match the color really well for you.Where can I find the interior paint color ';barely mocha'; by kilz? ?
go to local Wal-Mart and if they have the computer dispenser they can pull up name and auto dipense (you just need to let them know if flat, satin or semi-gloss and whether qt, gal,or 5 gal). If they do not have computerize dipenser (my store does not) here are the formulas you can give the associate (again let know sheen and what size):I am assuming you want the Kilz brand and not Color Place (Wal-Mart brand which does not have the primer added into paint like the Kilz line has)

    Qt: Base1 D=3.5 F=2.5

    Gal: Base 1 D=14 F=10

    5 gal: Base 1 D=1Y22 F= 1Y2

The associates will know what the letters and numbers mean, just relay the info you need
I wouldn't do a touch up from a can of paint that was not the original mixture that is currently on your walls. I'm not sure I'd even use the leftovers (if you still had them) if they were over 18 months old. My painter told me that there are great variances in paint, even within a batch: when they mix the paint %26amp; then pour it in the gallons, there is often a big difference in the first gallon poured %26amp; the last gallon. If you don't have any of the original leftover, I'd try to clean the spots (no ammonia based products). As far as finding a match goes, oftentimes paint dealers will have formulas for their competitors colors- ie- you can go into Home Depot %26amp; odds are they will know how to mix a Sherwin Williams color. You may have that luck with Kilz. Otherwise, I'd contact the company %26amp; ask them to provide you the base %26amp; the formula for the color. Best of luck to you!!
I would go back to that Kilz website and ask. If they no longer make that color, ask for the formula. Then you can get a matching color made at Walmart, Lowe's or Home Depot (just to name a few). If that doesn't work, bring in your old paint can and they can match it from that. If you don't have the paint can, then chip off a little piece somewhere not noticeable and they can match it from that. Good luck.
I would go to walmart, they carry Kilz brand of paint. It could possibly be there. If that doesn't work then I would call the company and ask. It might have been discontinued.

Safe to use Kilz primer before painting when pregnant?

I am 20 weeks pregnant and want to get started on the nursery soon but need to use Kilz primer before painting the walls. I myself will not be painting but will be in the house while it is being done. Is it safe to use, with the room having good ventilation?Safe to use Kilz primer before painting when pregnant?
You'll be fine if there's plenty of ventilation...just try not to spend that much time in that room because the smell is there and it might turn your stomach...plus there's still a ittle of the fumes in there. just stay clear of the room and you'll be fineSafe to use Kilz primer before painting when pregnant?
There is a kilz original and a kilz 2..the original is oil based with toxic solvents/fumes that could be very nauseating to you...the kilz 2 is water based and has no such solvents.....Kilz 2 isn't worth the money if you are killing stains..but as a primer is ok..only the original will kill stains..If you are simply priming to paint, and have no stains to block out..dont even use kilz..simply use a cheap latex flat pva paint...(painters vinyl acrylic)...It will work well as a primer, and is all you need to seal new drywall....Then apply the finish paint..whether be satin, eggshell, semi gloss etc over it..here is a good trick..if you are painting a colored wall..have the store mix the flat latex for primer 50% to 75% of the color formula of the top coat paint...Do not mix 100% on the primer for the bases of the paints are different....and it may come out darker than the finish paint..You want the primer lighter..and will insure a good coverage..
    Just take some simple precuations.

Stay away from the fumes... keep out of the room for a few days and vent the area.. You'll be fine. Prolonged exposure to the fumes and chemicals might be a problem... but just a quick painting will be ok.
Kilz has toluene in it, a chemical known to cause birth defects. Make sure you go nowhere near the room as it is painted. Also, as long as you can smell it, it is outgassing, and you don't want to breath the fumes. I think it is o.k. to stay in the house, but if you start smelling it, just take a jaunt to Barnes and Nobles and relax in the cafe, =-) Make sure the house is totally aired out before you return.

    Good Luck!

  • Can primer paint (ie Kilz) be tinted? If so ,with what?

Yes, when you buy it, ask the employee at the paint counter can tint it. For example, if you're painting a wall blue, they can tint the primer a light blue. It will make the paint cover better with fewer coats. Can primer paint (ie Kilz) be tinted? If so ,with what?
    Absolutely!

And if you're planning to make a big color change (painting a light color over a dark one, for example ... or if your new paint color is very dark or is red, which requires multiple coats), you really SHOULD have the primer tinted.

You can have it done at the store where you're buying the primer, right there at the paint counter. Walmart, for some reason, refused to tint the primer for me ... all other stores where I've bought paint (hardware, Home Depot, etc.) have done it willingly.

If you've already bought the primer and didn't have it tinted, either take it back or call the store to find out whether they'll tint it for you.

Can you use old paint for primer instead of using kilz or something like that?

NO -- not on ';raw/virgin'; surfaces. Use a primer.

If you're painting over a painted surface, then your primer is already on the wall. Just make sure it's clean -- grease free. Can you use old paint for primer instead of using kilz or something like that?
no the primers have different resinsCan you use old paint for primer instead of using kilz or something like that?
    You can but why would you want to. When you do a project you might as well do it right the first time just remember ';the quality of a project is long remembered after the cost is long forgotten';
no you can not use old paint for primer. you must use a primer like kilz for walls
You can, although kilz or another primer would minimize the flashing and imperfections. However, if you do a good job and double or even triple coat it it will look fine.
it really depends on what your priming, raw wood , or walls you could use old latex paint on your walls/ ceilings if it is still good and has been kept a a steady temp, but i would use a oil primer on any raw wood

Can i use latex paint if im using oil base kilz to prime a unfinished wallboard?

yesCan i use latex paint if im using oil base kilz to prime a unfinished wallboard?
I'm assuming KILZ is like BIN, a strong primer for smoke damage, mold, etc.

    YES.

Always try an unseen area first, but I think that it is not a true oil base product because clean up is diffucult with paint thinners. Can i use latex paint if im using oil base kilz to prime a unfinished wallboard?
Yes. latex will work over kilz. I've done it many many times.
Yes, I was always told latex can go over oil but oil can't go over

    latex.
hello painter here! you are correct! latex can go on oil but oil cannot go on latex. now when you say wallboard... what do you mean? not sheetrock right? i ask because you really shouldn't use oil for the first coat on sheetrock.

    lj
Are you sure Kilz is oil based? I thought that it was alcohol based. Either way, you can use latex over it.
Yes, Or you could use the expensive stuff, used specifically for unfinished wall board.

New childrens pine furniture, I am wanting to paint & design. Is there any need in sanding along with Kilz to?

Like others have said, it depends on what state the pine furniture is in? Sometimes when you buy unfinished furniture, it's already been sanded. Other times, it hasn't! If you want it to take the paint well, it needs to be prepped, which may require some sanding.

See an excerpt from this site page below:

    http://www.generalfinishes.com/tips/prep鈥?/a>

    ';Sanding preparation

We cannot stress enough that you must have a strong base of proper sanding to achieve the perfect finish!! See our sanding tutorial below if you want more details. All surfaces should be clean and free from all dirt and oils. Prep sanding is done with progressively finer grits. Do NOT start sanding with very fine sandpaper on unfinished wood. Prepare the surface by using medium paper first, and then proceed to finer grades. On most raw woods, start sanding in the direction of the grain using a #120-150 grit paper before staining and work up to #220 grit paper.

On soft woods such as Pine, Aspen or Alder, sand first with #120 and finish with #220. On hardwoods such as Oak, Maple, Birch or Parawood, sand first with #120 and finish no finer than #180.

On hard woods such as maple or birch, start with a #120 grit paper and finish with a #150 grit paper to keep the grain open and receptive to stain. Finish the final sanding with a finer grit sandpaper such as #220.

Do not over sand or you may seal the wood so much that it will not take a finish. End-grains (areas where the wood has been cut against the grain), such as the front side of a table, tend to soak up more stain than other surfaces. Give end-grain areas an additional sanding to control the absorption of stain. ';New childrens pine furniture, I am wanting to paint %26amp; design. Is there any need in sanding along with Kilz to?
Sanding is a matter of apearance. If you do not have rub spots or rough spots to remove, sanding is not needed as a matter to improve adhesion of the primer. Kilz is a good primer to use.New childrens pine furniture, I am wanting to paint %26amp; design. Is there any need in sanding along with Kilz to?
On new furniture, you night want to touch it up first, as the better the surface, the better the final paint job. I do not see Kilz as a necessity. Any good primer will do the trick.

How many coats of kilz do i need? and what kind of paint should i use after on my wicker furniture?

im trying to paint my wicker furniture from black to white. i spray painted it once already with kilz but it has a purple tint to it now i bought some krylon spray paint for wicker and tryed painting over it and you couldn't even tell. So im wondering if i should paint another light coat of kilz and then spray paint the kylon on or some other kind of spray paint? also i was wondering if i should put some type of glaze on afterwards? thx in advancedHow many coats of kilz do i need? and what kind of paint should i use after on my wicker furniture?
Pick up a can of white primer and give it 2 light coats. then give it 2-3 light coats with the finish paint. Do not try to save time by applying heavy coats or you will end up with runs all over the place. Hope this helps. How many coats of kilz do i need? and what kind of paint should i use after on my wicker furniture?
The advertisement says one coat of kilz should do it. Krylon is not a heavy-duty paint. You might try what's called '; base coat'; then a layer of white spray on enamel. If it's to be outdoors put Thompson's Weather Sealant; They have it in spray or paint on. It should do the trick. Also, you could consult Home Depo but the above information is accurate.
I think you'll have a hard time going such an extreme on color without it looking like its gobbed with paint. I would go for a navy or dark green instead, still doing the kilz. If you still want white, just keep layering it on and letting it dry for a few days.
I'd use enough primer to get it to look almost pure white. The reason being, you're going to paint a couple coats of a white paint over it, so it will continue to look whiter, but it's better to be safe than sorry with paint!
The more coats the better! Killz is kinda thin, I needed 3 coats to make a good primer on the walls of this nasty apartment I rented awhile back. I would imagine you would need some decent coats since you're making such a drastic change in color.
There's some kind of chemical interaction going on that is not good. Considering the cost of Krylon and Kilz (which haven't worked), I would buy the cheapest possible spray paint from a dollar store and try that.
Kilz is really a primer. I would suggest that you go to your paint store %26amp; see what they say. You might save yourself time %26amp; money by asking a pro.
buy a resperator if you are gonna use killz...

    or enjoy the free buzz
    Woodtick is on it.

    Real wicker?

Stripped %26amp; painted lots of antique wicker in old shop, some dark green to white.( but not black).

Thick coats of anything can soften what 's underneath %26amp; cause it to bleed through.

Use thin well dried prime coats.

You may see some ';color'; but it should not appear to be ';weeping'; from below.

Might try light grey auto primer; at his point can't hurt.

Spraying is best but ';soaking'; w/ paint can start the bleeding all over again

Trick to painting wicker is not to over do it.

Wicker flexes %26amp; thick paint will separate as it ';works'; %26amp; dull any detail.

For repainting un-stripped pieces sprayed oil based primer %26amp; exterior oil based semi gloss or gloss enamel.

Reason ?.... that's what's been keeping the old stuff around so long.

If you stop the bleed through, krylon should be fine.

Would not use a glaze/ clearcoat.

    Best regards

I painted w/ a light eggshell colored latex paint. Do i need to kilz over it to paint a darker color?

No unless someone wrote on the walls or there is was a fire and smoke damage. On an ordinary wall painted a light color you do not need Kilz.

  • Paint problem over Kilz?

I am repainting a laundry room and had to patch some gouges. After doing so, I primed with Kilz premium. The original paint was a flat finish and after painting with a Behr eggshell finish I find that the primed areas stand out with a glossier sheen than the rest of the wall. Is there a way to eliminate this without having to prime the whole wall as I have a couple of other rooms to do as well and would rather not have to go thru all that trouble. Perhaps painting the primed areas with a flat finish first and then recoating with the eggshell? Or maybe just scuff sand the areas after painting to reduce the sheen? Hope someone can help!! Thanks, PaulPaint problem over Kilz?
Hi Paul, the problem is that the areas where you painted Kilz are sealed much better than the other areas. So, the Kilz areas are looking the way the finish coat is supposed to look but the other areas are soaking in too much paint. You can paint everything in Kilz and then recoat the finish coat. If you put one more coat of finish without using Kilz....it may or may not solve your problem. Who ever painted the room, in the first place, probably did not put a good primer coat on.Paint problem over Kilz?
It may look glossier because of the wall texture, The patched areas are smoother than the surrounding drywall. It is not really from the primer
have been painting for years for the best look prim all the walls ,the kils will bake a good moistur bearer also

Is there anything i can do for the odor in kilz paint?

I am going to be painting my kitchen and her it is October and i can't exactly keep windows and doors open. I have heard of putting vanilla extract in paint. Is this true or is there something else out there? Please help!Is there anything i can do for the odor in kilz paint?
Just use a lot of fans and you'll just have to wait a day or two.t The smell will pass.

Be careful of adding stuff to paint. It could be oily and end up leaving streaks or prevent it from curing all the way.

Can satin latex paint be mixed with kilz?

The point of Kilz is to prime the walls and seal any stains or dark color so it doesn't bleed through to the new paint.

If the paint that's on the door is chipping and peeling off, it will continue to do so if you just paint over it. The chipping paint will need to be sanded off. Prime it with a primer that is made for the type of surface your door is made out of and then cover it with an appropriate paint.

Water based Kilz and White paint turning yellow!?

We just built brand new framing and window sills from pine. I first painted the pine with a water based white Kilz primer and then painted the top coat with a Glidden Semi Gloss White....it's already discoloring, it's only been a year!!

We are renovating the whole house and I want to find a solution ASAP before we continue with other windows and trim!

Should I get a higher quality paint? HELP!!!Water based Kilz and White paint turning yellow!?
I am in the UK, but I kind of know what Kilz is. It is not something I would have put on wood. New bare wood really needs a thinned oil-based primer, but I am not sure if your laws allow that where you are. Some places only allow water-based paints I believe.

As you have primed there is no point in applying primer to painted wood. If you can only use water-based paints see if you can get hold of Sikkens water-based undercoat and satin finishes. I forget what they are called, but the oil-based versions are Onol and Rubbol.

  • What is kilz paint made of molecularly?

My wife got some Kilz paint of her navy blue pants and wanted to get it out. I didn't have paint thinner or mineral spirits. She put it in water which I knew wasn't right but then through OxyClean on it and I leaned towards acidic which would be good. Lighter fluid! That would probably work which it did. My wife said how do you know. I promptly answered 'Chemistry' with a grin on my face. It was perfect because I just committed to doing a Chemistry paper on household chemicals that very night! Thank you Jesus!

I looked online but didn't see anything related to its chemical makeup. Nothing on the label besides oil-based paint which is kind of general and was hoping for something a little more specific. Any ideas?

What is kilz paint made of molecularly?
Oil-based paints typically use an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon as the solvent. So I would expect lighter fluid to remove the paint, but it might not be the best choice: lighter fluid contains some heavier hydrocarbons that might take a long time to evaporate (not really sure how long though - you should test it, as the wait may not be as bad as I guessed). A better solution, assuming you don't just buy some paint thinner, would be to use rubber cement solvent (n-heptane). Gasoline would probably work as well, but you again have the problem of residual chemicals (especially all of the additives).

Why can't you mix Kilz Primer with the same color of the paint you're going to use?

Its a good question that I used to ask my shop teacher. I think its poinless to paint to layers, but he explained to me that putting primer on seeps in the wood that your painting to make the paint come out smoother when you put it on. Still, i think it would save time to do that but he said it would thin the paint and make it come off easier. Why can't you mix Kilz Primer with the same color of the paint you're going to use?
Kilz and regular primers have specific jobs!! kilz not only primes but is used to kill mold and fungus in woods or ceilings!! primers seal wood so that paint does not soak in or fall off .. paint adheres to the primer for nice even coats.. DO NOT play cheap and mix them, you will end up with a very bad paint job!!! be lazy now and do four times the work later getting all the bad stuff off and doing it right!!Why can't you mix Kilz Primer with the same color of the paint you're going to use?
You can if both the primer and the paint are made of the same base. The original KILZ is oil based and will not mix with latex paint. KILZ II is latex based and should mix fine with latex paint.
First of all kilz is an oil base not latex or water like the last guy said, They dont know what they are talking about. Kils is meant to be a primer to seal bad oders or stains in your walls or floors . And when you use kilz you dont want to use an airless to spray with the overspray will kill you really fast. So the answer would be -NO-. I do this kinda work for a living.
You can it just need to be an appropriate base tint. Personally I just add 1 cup of the paint I intent to finish with to the kilz first then paint that way I only need 2 coats the Kilz and the top coat.
Kilz comes in oil and latex, there's Kilz which is oil and Kilz 2 which is latex. Another answer says Kilz kills mildew, it DOESN't and if anyone has doubts go to the Kilz site. Let me make it simple for ya Jas, you've got a pitt bull for a dog would you put a prarrie dog with it WHY NOT because even though there both dogs they don't mix.

I've used Kilz to paint over my vinyl panels in my Manufactured Home, But....?

Some parts of the wall are very rough and some are smooth because we had to mud some parts. If I paint over it, will it look obvious and terrible? I'm painting it a very light blush peach.I've used Kilz to paint over my vinyl panels in my Manufactured Home, But....?
You need to sand it and make it as smooth as possible or the rough spots are going to show through the paint.

The only other thing that would work is if you do texture painting then you wouldn't have to sand...if you go this route check out texture painting on the internet or ask them were you brought the paint..I have used the brand you mention (Kilz) and I purchased mine at Menards...I have also heard someone on this website mention.. for texture painting about adding sand to the paint..but I would ask a professional.

yea sure ya can just do a couple of coats...with time for drying inbetween...just dont glob it on...2 or 3 thin coats will be good...just remember not to paint the window closed... move the window up and down slightly in between drying timesCan I use Kilz as the only coat of paint for a window in a shower?
they do sell paints that are combo....primer and finish.....but just Kilz is NOT a good idea.....look at the MISTINTS at Lowe's or Home Depot, they're usually $5 for a gallon and you might find a color u like
no Kilz is a primer you need an enamel type paint to keep the water from damaging the wall board
its not paint..you need to use a gloss [or at min semi gloss over it] you can buy a 1/2 pint of real paint...look for trim paint
Kilz has a flat finish. You should use a glossy finish in wet or damp areas to help keep moisture from soaking in.
Yes Tink, sure you can, Kilz is designed to ';kill'; mold and mildew and the odors associated with them, although it is more like a kind of base or primer coat, although if already painted then I would have simply used new paint as in that case no base or primer coat is needed.

Is kilz better then regular paint to cover mold?

on wood in basement? Is kilz better then regular paint to cover mold?
Yes clean the area as stated by the other answerer.

I suggest that you clean the area then use a spray bottle with bleach for a few days and continually air-ate the area. If the wood is squishy replace it. Find the source of the mold and treat all the areas. Was this an isolated issue that caused this or is there some issue that will reoccur.

Be sure it is thoroughly dry before priming with kilz. There are 2 kinds of Kilz. General Purpose and Wood one if this is going on the wood get the wood kind. Kilz has inhibitors but does not kill mold.

Kilz is a primer not a paint. after you cover with Kilz you should then paint over the area.Is kilz better then regular paint to cover mold?
There is also a zinser product (which is another type of primer) that is made for mold and mildew. Make sure you use the bleach solution to clean and treat like in the other answers. If you take care of the mold and use the kilz or zinser primer and paint over it then it won't come back. If it DOES come back then you need to cut out that portion of the drywall and replace it because it means it went all the way through. As long as the mold isn't really black and nasty and you got to it soon enough, then you shouldn't go crazy and think you're gonna inhale all the bad stuff.
    M-1 Advanced Mildewcide.

Scrape the paint, use drywall sandpapper, and yes, use Kilz!

    From the Kilz Site:

To block mold and mildew stains:

KILZ Exterior, KILZ 2 Latex, and KILZ Premium primers

Mold and mildew covered surfaces must be thoroughly washed with a mildew remover, rinsed with water and allowed to dry before priming. We recommend KILZ 2 Latex primer or KILZ Premium primer for interior surfaces, and KILZ Exterior primer, KILZ 2 Latex primer, and KILZ Premium primer for exterior Mildew-prone areas.
Yes, but you should scrub all off the mold first with a 10% Clorox/water solution and make sure it is completely dry before you paint over it. I think you could use a hair dryer to help dry it out.
I agree with alice, but KILZ is a primer, this means you need to apply paint over the primer once that is dry also.
    yes
It depends how deep the mold really is, Sometimes it can get behind the dry wall and start to rot the base wood. Anyway the mold MUST be removed because it is a serious health risk that WILL eventually cause respiratory illness. What you are wanting to do is just like painting over rust. The mold will bleed through no matter how you prime and scrub. http://www.ehow.com/how_2056875_eliminat鈥?/a>

  • Can I use oil-based paint over varnished bathroom cabinets without first using KILZ?

Yes you can. But you should use a product called ';NO-SAND'; just before you start paint on the existing varnish so that it will ';Soften'; the surface of the varnish and allow the paint to stick to the surface. But try this in a TEST area first so you can see if there will be a reaction to the paint such as wrinkling. Can I use oil-based paint over varnished bathroom cabinets without first using KILZ?
You can, if you sand the finish to give the paint something to hold onto first. Personally, I hate to sand; I'd rather paint two coats than sand. Quite frankly, there's a good chance you'll wind up painting at least two coats anyway, without a primer; depending on how dark your cabinets are, you're probably not going to get the coverage you want. A primer will not only help the paint adhere to the varnish, it really makes a difference to the final appearance. Make sure, in either case, you clean the surface well. I also suggest you use BIN or XIM, rather than KILZ. I think they have better sticking power. And do yourself a favor and remove hardware and cabinet doors -- it's much easier to paint the doors separately, and you get a much cleaner job if you don't try to paint around the hinges and pulls. Can I use oil-based paint over varnished bathroom cabinets without first using KILZ?
My motto is ';when in doubt, use primer.'; Why take the chance of ruining the cabinets and creating more work for yourself? And Kilz is good stuff.
No, and your cabinets will also need a little prep work before you get started. Sand lightly, then prime, then paint.
I wouldn't, I would probably sand first, at least try it in hidden area first!
I think it will crackle. Take the time to do the proper prep work, you'll be glad you did. It will take much longer to fix a mess.

KILZ paint. Serious side effects that require more than fresh air? Any tips and/or links?

I've used KILZ paint and haven't had any problems. Just crack a window or open a door and you should be fine. If you are having more serious side effects other than finding the smell annoying, then you should call the hospital emergency room and talk to the triage nurse.KILZ paint. Serious side effects that require more than fresh air? Any tips and/or links?
Would you mind explaining what the hell your talking about?

Does anyone have any opinions on KILZ latex paint? I am reading mixed reviews.?

I've used it, and yes it does cover in one coat. I doubt I would use it again, though.. the finish seems ';chalky.';Does anyone have any opinions on KILZ latex paint? I am reading mixed reviews.?
As an owner of rental properties I have had excellent results with Kilz covering up stains, smoke smell %26amp; light damage, as well as other minor issues. Usually 2 coats works best, then paint with regular, good quality paint. Flat paint is not washable, so you might want to try satin or eggshell finish over the Kilz.

Good luck!Does anyone have any opinions on KILZ latex paint? I am reading mixed reviews.?
I've had very good results. Key is, don't let them add any tint at the store, and when you use it, don't mix anything with it.
Use it according to the instructions and use it in a well ventilated area. I used it on a room the previous owners had painted this unbelievable pink/purple color.

Killz covered it in one coat. I swear by it.
i am a woman who painted houses for 12 years in S. Fl.(interior and exteriors, someone once ask if i got paid for my painting? :) ) i sometimes had the unfortunate, even more so for the customers, task of fire damaged homes. these were the walls that only had the smoke damage and the only product we used was Kilz, however it was an oil based paint. i have used it to cover ';art work'; from all four of my children, and other we ones, using as PAINT, lipstick, waxy crayons, and pen just to name a few and will continue to swear by Kilz, it has never come back to haunt me, ';their portraits';, as precious as they were. however, for this light task in comparison to smoke damage, I have used the water based (latex) and it worked as diligently as oil based over smoke. Try a small area, hopefully you can obtain a quart of your choice, if it does not work use the paint in a closet or garage!
I've had good results too in a basement. It smelled bad at first but that goes away when it is dry and it was easy to keep clean.

Can Kilz primer be tinted the same color as the paint?

I am going to paint a room in my home. Someone told me to buy a primer and have it tinted the same color as the paint. Their reason was ....the tinted primer is easier to cover versus white primer. And, I will use less paint; therefore it will save me money!

So..it is true primer can be tinted? I wish I had known this a long time ago.Can Kilz primer be tinted the same color as the paint?
I believe you can but check the link below to be sure. Have Fun!!Can Kilz primer be tinted the same color as the paint?
Yes. Tell the paint guy what your final color will be and that you want to tint your primer accordingly.
behr paint comes with primer built in, not all but what painters put on my house, @ home depot. Kilz is real good for covering water stains and such. my 2 cents worth.
Kilz makes a tintable white paint./primer, check walmart for cheap prices,
Yes. and I want your body
Yes, you can tint primer, Kilz is a sealer type of paint to cover water stains or any other stain you might have on your painting area, And it works great.
Yes you can have the primer tinted. Usualy it wil be tinted with half the formula of the paint color.( Painter 18 yrs.)

Can I use kilz for the outside of a house and not cover it with regular paint?

Kilts is just like primer, its designed to hold the paint to the surface for an even flow and even finish.Kilts is not paint ,it will dry, change color, and texture, you want be able to clean a kilts surface like a paint surface.Kilts surface will dull very quickly unlike paint will. Can I use kilz for the outside of a house and not cover it with regular paint?
You can use it if it is rated for outside use.It will have a dull finish but will be fine as long as it states for exterior use.

Does Kilz have as much titanium dioxide as Benjamin Moore paint?

If not, what makes Kilz cover so well?Does Kilz have as much titanium dioxide as Benjamin Moore paint?
No. There are different amounts of TO2 in both of these products. The Kilz uses different resins to make it cover so well. The TO2 is probably the most expensive part of any paint product, hence the price difference between Kilz and BM.Does Kilz have as much titanium dioxide as Benjamin Moore paint?
Thy Benjamin Moores new Aura product. It's the best covering product on the market!!

  • What kind of kilz should I use for the bathroom walls/ceiling before I paint them?

I want the best Kilz, because there is no windows in my bathroom and it gets mold easily.

after I painted with Kilz, how long should I wait to paint?

what kind of paint is good for the bathroom?

Thanks. What kind of kilz should I use for the bathroom walls/ceiling before I paint them?
Lowes has a mold proof paint and use latex kilz or zinzar 123What kind of kilz should I use for the bathroom walls/ceiling before I paint them?
Any Kilz is good, one of the main things to remember here is to prepare the wall first. Product is important but preparing is almost more important. If your wall is shiny, (I suspect it is) get a deglosser, use this first as directed. There are many that are no rinse and great to use. Then apply primer and paint. Read label on primer to see how long they want you to wait to paint. Use a paint that is an eggshell or higher(an enamel) in sheen so you can clean, depending on how shiny you want your bath. Check my website, I have a couple pages on tips, preparing etc., might help you.

Can i use non oil based paint over kilz primer?

I was told to primer over plastic outlet covers before I painted them to match the walls in my bedroom. I did so with Kilz spray primer. I was told that my non oil based interior paint may not stick well to the kilz since it is oil based. Any thoughts before I try this??Can i use non oil based paint over kilz primer?
Yes,,,, there will be no problems. Can i use non oil based paint over kilz primer?
Unless the spray primer said that kilz was oil based then someone is crazy. Kilz is not normally oil based. If it is oil based then use oil based paint to paint them, other wise normal paint works fine.

Look on the can. If you can clean up with soap and water, its water based. It will say Oil based otherwise. Most sprays I ever used were water based. Its actually getting hard to purchase Oil based paint these days. Most stores like Lowes mostly only sell water based paints.
    Yup!!
    its ok

Why would Kilz go on and dry like an orange peel over Latex paint and what should I do?

I had painted my bathroom and decided i didn't like the dark color so the next day I put Kilz(primer) over it. As it was going on it was sticky a little and dried in places like an orange peel. What should I do now?Why would Kilz go on and dry like an orange peel over Latex paint and what should I do?
Paint is required to ';cure'; for 14 days.. By painting the surface again the very next day, you caused a chemical reaction with the still wet (although, not to the touch) paint and the kitz.. You're probably going to have to go ahead and sand the surface down then use the kitz first, then paint whatever color your going to want to go with over that..Why would Kilz go on and dry like an orange peel over Latex paint and what should I do?
the wall was dirty. hairspray ect will get on bathrooms walls and cause paint to orange peel. you need to sand the kilz just in the places this happened then wash the area with tsp. rinse, allow to dry repaint. always prior to painting you need to prep the walls by washing them tsp is one of the best things to do this with. oh you may have used a semi gloss paint which would cause an orange peel to. same fix though
    Did you mix it properly?
You probably used alcohol based Kilz and it was too ';hot'; for the existing paint (hot means the primer's solvent melted into the old paint before it dried).

The old paint probably wasn't ordinary paint - probably an latex-enamel.

All you can do is sand the spots down, OR use Goof-Off OR liquid sandpaper. If need be Spackle it to even it out. Finally use a water based primer product.

Is Kilz a good exterior paint too?

It is not even a paint. It is a ';stain stopper';. Outside and inside. Example: have you ever painted raw cedar siding white. Let it dry and then noticed lots of orange ';burned thru''; the white especially around the knots? That is the sap of the cedar. Putting a coat of kilz on that area ontop of the paint will (when it is dry) glass over the stain flow , and what goes thru glass.....nothing. Now when you put on a second coat of paint on all the cedar(and over top of the Kilz treated spot. nothing shows. It is all white....as you wanted it.

There is also this evil stuff called indelible pencil. If it was used on the wall, you can paint over it 5 times(drying each coat) and it still shows thru.

Basically you make the discovery when you put on the first coat of paint, which usually covers all pencil marks no problems. (I hate carpenters who use that pencil and make them fix it without telling them how. They don't do it anymore.) After the first coat dries. Then apply Kilz to the problem areas, just spray bomb a patch and let that dry and then reroll the wall or rebrush the molding with the next coat of paint.

Kilz is shellac. That is why I say hard like glass, shellac is like that. It will hold back sap, grease, tar,(provided there isn't too much of the stuff. And as you can not reuse the brush in anything else and it basically goes to ';pot'; I get the spray bombs. Doesn't have to go on super heavy to completely hide the mark as shellac is semi transparent. It is just whitish so you can see where you have been. Get it wet on problem area and leave it to dry. Then paint over with exterior paint.

Done like Borscht. Is Kilz a good exterior paint too?
No, it is just a primer. However, they now make a latex version called Kilz-2, which can be found at Home Depot or Lowe's, which works great on exteriors before painting.

I recently primed with Kilz over a waterbased paint what will happen?

I painted over a water based paint with Kilz oil based primer, and now what to paint over that..what should I do?...of course I already purchased another water based paint...helpI recently primed with Kilz over a waterbased paint what will happen?
The Kilz would have sealed it so that anything under it won't seep through when you paint with something else. So nothing should happen by your having used Kilz over it.I recently primed with Kilz over a waterbased paint what will happen?
I presume you meant the oil-based Kilz. They have latex Kilz now. Just completed a monster re-paint. Since you are wanting to paint with latex paint, you do need to re-prime with the latex Kilz or some other primer. Sherwin Williams' version is called Pro-Block.
you should be alright i done the same thing. my neabors car burned in his drive way my windows where open got smoke damage in my house near the windows and on the cealing i washed the stains of put a coat of kills and it loooks great. been about 3 months now
Your OK latex will stick to kilz
Well, nothing will happen with the primer, you can paint over latex with oil, but not the other way around. You'll have to prime your oil primer now, or the latex will crack after a while. Sorry. Nowadays it's just best to stick with latex paints. They've come a long way as far as durability and can't be matched in cleanup.
You can use Latex over Kilz oil based primer.

This is from the ';Official'; Kilz website...

KILZ Original primer/sealer will dry to the touch in 30 minutes and can be recoated or topcoated in one hour with either latex or oil-based paint. It makes an excellent enamel undercoater, leaving the surface well prepared for a smooth, enamel finish.
Kilz is a primer. You can topcoat anything over a fully cured primer. My wood siding was scraped and reprimed with oil based primer and top coated with acrylic, as per Benjamin Moore paint instructions. Ten years and still looks good. Are you sure your Kilz is oil, by the way? They have several formulas. The best for interior stain killing is the shellac based one.

  • How to wash the kilz paint off the brush to be able to use them again t the next day?

I just put the brush directly into a zipper bag - be sure it is zipped with no air inside. If you are using other white paint at the same time, label the bags. It will be useable for up to two days later. How to wash the kilz paint off the brush to be able to use them again t the next day?
Wrap the brush in aluminum foil and place it in the refrigerator.

Unwrap it the next day and use it.

No need to wash it before putting it away. How to wash the kilz paint off the brush to be able to use them again t the next day?
i heard that you need to put in the refrigerator or something and the paint will just fall off and you'll be able to use it the next day.
If it's oil based paint, you can put it in a ziplock, push the air out and put it in the freezer and you can use it the next day. If you want to clean it out, you'll need mineral spirits.

You can do the same with water based paint with the ziplock, but why not just wash it out? You can just use watera and a mild soap duluted. I just use 2 buckets.
IF THE KILZ PAINT IS OIL BASE PAINT YOU SHOULD USE LACQUER THINNER. LET THE BRUSH SIT IN LAQUER THINNER FOR 5 MINUTES, THEN USE A WIRE BRUSH TO BRUSH OF THE OLD PAINT. IF ITS WATER BASE PAINT USE WARM WATER AND SOAP AND DO THE SAME PROCEDURE. THEN SPIN THE BRUSH TO GET ALL THE THINNER OR WATER OUT AND HANG IT TO DRY.

Is it best to Kilz a semi gloss painted wall before painting over it with a flat paint?

I was wondering if the flat paint will stick to the wall.Is it best to Kilz a semi gloss painted wall before painting over it with a flat paint?
Kilz is the best way to hide anything. You can buy Kilz in a latex base, which makes it easier to clean up.Is it best to Kilz a semi gloss painted wall before painting over it with a flat paint?
You only need to use the kilz if there are water stains or something on the walls. like where it rained in or something. you can paint over the semi gloss just by putting a cheap primer under it.. and then painting it the color that you want it to be.
You better believe it if it's enamel. Water base paints will peel and chip over enamel.

If it is water base, no problem. Just use ';Liqued Sandpaper'; to clean and prepare the surface.
Yes, it is. Remember though that Kiltz paint can not be washed

off of your skin or surfaces with soap and water. Have Mineral

Spirits on hand to use for clean-up.

Dawn and Nail Polish Remover together work on skin but use in

a ventilated area and if necessary take off a bit at a time. Otherwise your skin will become irritated
you dont necessairly have to kilz it ,you could just do two coats of flat, but if you do any spackling or patching to the wall it would be a good idea to prime those spots. ..A painting contractor for 15 years...

Can a newly pregnant woman use KILZ interior paint without harming their unborn baby?

I would rather someone else do the painting for me. But if you must, make sure the room is well ventilated. Open windows and leave doors open. And take breaks in between! Can a newly pregnant woman use KILZ interior paint without harming their unborn baby?
Get someone else else to do it!

Better to be safe than sorryCan a newly pregnant woman use KILZ interior paint without harming their unborn baby?
hopefully not but with a name brand like KILZ it doesnt sound like a good idea
As long as there is plenty of ventilation, then you should be fine. You don't want to be cooped up with the fumes, so if you can open windows, have fans on etc... you should be fine, just keep the air circulating.
When you're pregnant and need something painted, it is better to let someone else do the dirty work for you...
As far as I remember, kilz is very strong smelling, I would be cautious with a paint that full of fumes. I painted my daughters room with a couple of friends when I was pregnant, but we used a paint that had very low odor. We kept the window open and a fan blowing, and I also wore a mask. I took a lot of breaks and made sure to get plenty of fresh air.

If it was normal paint, I'd say it's ok but take precaution. I wouldn't feel comfortable painting with kilz pregnant, even taking all the precautions that I did. That stuff is strong. definetly have someone else do it for you, no use risking it.
you shouldnt paint when pregnant. Paint fumes can get bad enough to actually make you pass out. Sences of smell are increased in pregnancy . Wait until afterwards or pull the penny saver and pay someone 50 bucks to paint a room.

Kilz paint is made by behr just like kilz primer. It the low end of the behr paint company.

Kilz is best know for the ';covering stain'; product. I've not used their room paint. I have no problem with Behr. My house painter does prefer more professional paints such as Sherwin Williams though.
Kilz is a primer, you want cheap paint or quality?
zinnser is primer , stain blocker . then place desired top coat and color of your choice . you might want to tint the primer it helps
Kilz/Zinsser/Bullseye is a stain-blocker/primer. It comes in oil-based (=alkyd) and water-based (=latex). Depending on what you are painting, and what it was previously painted with (if anything), you have to choose which Kilz (= Zinsser) to use. You can paint oil-based/alkyd paint on top of latex, but NOT latex on top of oil-based paint. Most exterior paints are oil-based, most interior paints are latex. Use the wrong paint or primer and your final coat just won't come out the way you wanted it to. As stated above, Behr is Home Depot's private-label product; it's good paint, but many pros prefer Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, etc. Any doubts, talk to a paint store pro, they are usually happy to help. (P.S%26gt;, the cost of many paints is linked to the amount of titanium oxide and other pigments...percentages of the various ingredients are on the back label...spend some time reading labels--and taking notes--before you spend your money. Don't forget to follow instructions about how to prepare the to-be painted surfaces. And if you have more than one can of paint, buy an empty 5-gallon bucket and pour all of the paints together and stir them well, otherwise you might have slight variations in the final effect,
Kilz/Zinnser Bulls Eye(both oil) is a primer and Behr Paint is a latex paint/primer. I would spent the money on the primer(oil) and have it color matched to the paint you are using. Then go over it with the latex of your choice. The process might be long (drying time) but it will be well worth it in the long run by any means.
Kilz is used to cover dark colors such as black, or to seal crayon or marker stains on walls so they do not ';bleed'; through when you get ready to paint.

Behr paint is the home depot brand of paint. Once you properly seal the stains or dark paint you will be ready to paint a new color without fear of it showing through

Does the one coat guarantee Kilz paint work?

Yes, as long as you are painting a light color over a light color. I used it in my kitchen. I painted ';dried fava'; over ivory and it worked great! If you are trying to paint a light color over a dark on I would first us a coat of primer and then you should only need one coat of paint. If you are painting a dark color over a light one you should have the primer tinted the same color as your paint color. I used this techniques when painting my living room red. I only needed one coat of primer and 2 coats of paint instead of the standard 5+ coats you usually need when painting dark colors.Does the one coat guarantee Kilz paint work?
yes, but you may need 2 coatsDoes the one coat guarantee Kilz paint work?
I used 2 coats because it was streaked.

I used it over dark paneling 2 coats %26amp; painted a light color though
Just be sure you are buying the right Kilz for your job. I bought the latex Kilz2 and had to redo the ceilings with Kilz oil based. There were smokers in the house and the Kilz2 didn't cover the smoke damage. Kilz 2 will also not cover water stains either
as long as you are not painting over lead based paint yes it does.
Pretty much. And if not, hey... guarantee!
yes if it is sealing and the color over it is deeper then the color your painting over.
    I give it a 5 1/2
You can have it tinted close to the color you are going to paint over it. Also, the oil based Kilz works best (tint it), but it is very smelly. Make sure it is well vented and you may need a respirator!

Why can you paint over Kilz one with latex paint?

I thought a person could not paint over oil base with latex paint? Why can you paint over Kilz one with latex paint?
I say check the label, but in general, you can paint over Kilz oil base with latex. Why can you paint over Kilz one with latex paint?
if you scuff up the oil layer and apply the kilz this will act as a barrier separating the two products from each other, so long as the oil paint is dry. when wet they will separate
I have been a paint department manager for many years. This is I have learned over the years. You can paint over an oil based primer with a latex paint. You can not paint over an oil based paint with a latex paint. Go Figure, I can't remember the reason why, sorry. And you can paint over an oil based paint with latex paint if you sand the surface first. If you want more information, go to Kilz.com. or call 1-866-Primer-1. That is Kilz Primer's question hot-line. Byee
doesn't matter with Kiltz . It to seal any surface so your paint don't soak right thru!
You can. I do it all the time with no problems. Things-products change for the better.
escruggs is right. i only use oil based primer, it bonds better. you have to wait a bit longer for it to dry before you can put the top coat on, but it will stick to the surface better. good luck.
Yes, you CAN paint over oil based paints with latex. It's the other way around that causes all the problems. Never paint oil based over latex.

If I remember correctly, KILZ is a shellac. This would more than likely require a solvent such as thinner, turpentine, etc... use a dampened rag with the solvent and apply slowly and sparingly to see it you can remove it by layers until you get to the leather itself.. Wash carefully with water or cut solvent.. This COULD damage the leather depending on the type and finish .. be warned.Help I need to remover dry (kilz) paint.?

yes because it is the moistest, wettest place in the house and that water and steam and damage that paint and cause it to mold very quickly ( that why we have it in ours, LOL)

I used Kilz latex paint before spray painting on a styrofoam project. Part of it melted. What did I do wrong?

It's possible that the Kilz wasn't applied properly to the areas that melted. The spray paint seeped through and caused the styrofoam to melt. Styrofoam does not like solvents.

Kilz may not be necessasary, although I would recommend removing the wallpaper first. Applying the paint might cause the vinyl to bubble up or let loose at the seams.. If your wall was properly prepared for vinyl application, It should be much easier to remove than regular paper wallpaper.. If you dont want to do that... There are some products available at paint stores (ie: Sherwin Williams etc..) that can be used to prep the vinyl for painting. They act as a kind of sealer/glue to keep the vinyl from letting loose when you paint it. We have used this a few times on jobs.. Plus, how long your vinyl has been on the wall could make a difference... If it is fairly new, then the glue will probably hold better.. The older it gets, the more brittle it becomes. I would recommend speaking with a paint store about the product i mentioned if you choose not to remove the vinyl... Hope this helps.

Vinly is very tough to get anything to stick to but it is very easy to remove, use a fingernail to get a corner started and pull it off the wall.
Is it textured or smooth? Some smooth, coated paper doesn't paint well. Test a section first. You can buy Kilz in a small amount or a spray can to test the area. Also be sure that the paper is on very securely or the edges may peel back when paint is applied because of the moisture in the paint. Good Luck with your project.
I would strongly suggest removing the wallpaper first. The paper can slowly peel off or bubble. Then your whole paint job will be ruined and you'll finally have to take it off anyways.

However, if the paper is in good condition and you really don't want to take the time to take it off, you can paint over it. Kilz will block the background and set as a good base for your regular paint.

If I want to paint over wooden paneling and I use kilz paint. Do I have to put a coat of Kilz on the wall firs

Do I just use the Kilz paint or the kilz primer and then the Paint? If I want to paint over wooden paneling and I use kilz paint. Do I have to put a coat of Kilz on the wall firs
Definitely go with a coat of primer first, most wood paneling has some type of sealer on it and without the primer your paint might chip.

Clean the paneling real well then apply the primer and paint. I did my moms with one coat primer two coats paint. Looks fantastic and it really brightened up a dark dreary basement. If I want to paint over wooden paneling and I use kilz paint. Do I have to put a coat of Kilz on the wall firs
    Always prime first then paint
You could go either way. I would think for the best results clean the walls well first, then apply the primer and let it dry for a day and then use the paint. Should look nice and last.
Prime, then paint. You might have to wash the wall first to get rid of any oil that might have been

    used in cleaning paneling.
It depends on which room this is in. If it is the bathroom or basement I would use Kilz primer first and then the paint. This is because of the moisture that these rooms have. If it is a bedroom or living room you could go either way. Also if the paneling has the lines in it and you don't want them to show. You can buy heavy white wallpaper that can be painted. Then you will have more of a sheetrock look to the walls instead of painted paneling look. The white wallpaper comes in different textures and designs.
Prime first with an oil based primer/sealer like Kilz, I personally like ';Cover Stain'; made by Zinsser but the most important thing is make sure it's an oil based primer or the tannin's or nicotine will bleed through your water based paint film and the last step would be a water based paint preferably a eggshell finish, Don't use flat paint you'll regret it. Good luck Les the painter

How do I make kilz paint thinner...?

so it's not so thick on dresser knobs..How do I make kilz paint thinner...?
Kilz makes a spray can version. It's great for painting things like knobs. If this isn't handy, then you can try thinning it with paint thinner, but I don't reccomend this. Kilz is pretty thin to begin with. How do I make kilz paint thinner...?
If it is latex ( which I suspect it is) you can buy an additive, or just use water. If it is oil based, you need to add thinner, or oil.
As said above, is better oil base spray paint for knobs, latex will get dirty in a few months.

Will Kilz paint remove the pine smell from my wood shelf?

I bought some brand new pine wood the other day, but would like to get rid of that pine smell, as it is getting into my cloth collectibles. I tried a krylon sealer, made it worse... tried painting them, didnt take the smell away. I tried that on the extras... I would like to do it right on the actual shelves. • How do I get kilz paint off color carpet?

Depending on how long it has been there/chemicals you've tried already Donna...

But...this should work and hold the colour fast....Can you get some professional hand cleaner...non grit...the jell or cream kind..water soluable...

Apply generously, agitate...cover with a cloth...let sit for one hour...re-agitate and remove with wet cloth, continue to rinse till gone...Wipe with dry cloth and let the air do the rest...

That should do it...Good luck....YukonezeHow do I get kilz paint off color carpet?
I've worked in a paint store for 5 years. You wont have too much luck with that. If it was latex maybe..but not kilz which is alcohol based. My suggestions to try would be to try using goof off. It comes in a small yellow bottle. You can also try laquer thinner, or acetone. it in vigorously, and rinse it of with lots of water because they will damage your carpet if left on too long. WIth all of these products, test an inconspicuous are first because they may damage your carpet. I'm not promising it will work but those are your best options to try. Good luck! How do I get kilz paint off color carpet?
Get some ';Goof Off'; or ';Goo Gone';. It removes almost everything.
good luck with that. my husband spilled paint on our carpet. he cleaned up most of it. i tried to shampoo the spot but dried paint is still there.
This trick was taught to me by a carpet cleaner - it's the best kept carpet cleaners spot cleaning secret.

    1. Go buy clear amonia and put it in a squirt bottle.

    2. Heat up your clothing iron on the hottest setting.

    3. Squirt down the spot until soaked. set a timer for 5 minutes.

    4. go wet down a white clean washcloth that you don't need anymore (with no stains on it or dirt), and ring it out.

    5. Lay the rag flat over the spot.

    6. place the iron on top of the rag, and count to 30-40. only go to 40 if you have big juervos because you can burn a spot on your carpet if you go too long.

the way it works is the heat pulls the stain into the rag because of the amonia. Repeat it until it's all gone. On the second or third time, soak it better with amonia, leave the amonia on it longer before applying the heat, and leave the iron on a little longer.

    works like magic every time!
